| I would rather my students draw chairs at the beginning level of their drawing careers, and they let me know how much they don't appreciate this fact when the class begins; however, they tell me how much they appreciate the fact that I did encourage them highly to draw chairs by the end of the class. I rarely use the model in a beginning class because of the history of drawing and representing the human figure, and most students' apprehension that arrives out of the history. In fact, at Mark's College I would not allow art students to take a figure drawing class until their third semester-at the earliest, and that class would start with an in-depth and very traditional study of the figure and end with an emotional response to the body that would make Kathe Kollowitz smile. |
